Japan is Beautiful!

Hello! My name is Monica, and I started teaching at SES with my boyfriend Jacob in April! I am originally from Massachusetts, however I moved to Pittsburgh six years ago. I met Jacob in 2016, and we decided that we wanted to move to Japan together. Fortunately, there were two positions open at SES, so we began preparing to move in March 2019. We arrived and began teaching at SES in April. We’re so excited to be here!

Since coming to Japan, I have enjoyed seeing so much beauty here. I’m looking forward to exploring even more of Yamaguchi Prefecture and the spectacular sights it has to offer!

Luckily, we arrived in Japan at the beginning of cherry blossom season! It was so wonderful to be welcomed to Japan by these beautiful flowers.

運がいいことに、桜のシーズンが始まったころに来たので、綺麗な花に迎えられての来日はとても素晴らしかったです。

During Golden Week, Jacob and I got a chance to visit Tenmangu Shrine in Hofu. We are lucky enough that it’s only a fifteen minute walk from our apartment!

ゴールデンウィークにジェイコブと私は防府天満宮に行く機会がありました。アパートから歩いて15分の所にあったのでラッキーでした！

In June, we visited Amidaji Temple for a hydrangea festival! Hydrangeas are one of my favorite flowers and we loved seeing the beautiful flowers at this temple.

6月には阿弥陀寺のアジサイ祭りに行ってきました。アジサイは私のお気に入りの花の一つで、お寺でたくさんの綺麗な花を見れました。

I’m looking forward to seeing many more beautiful and exciting places to visit in Japan! I’ll see you next time!

Ghosts in Hagi!

Hello! This is Khaulah again with a ghost story!
こんにちは、カウラです！今日は幽霊のお話をしたいと思います。

In May, I went sightseeing in Hagi with two friends who love Japan's military history. We visited influential figures' residences and old private schools for the samurai/philosophers/military men that contributed to the Meiji restoration.
5月に日本の軍隊の歴史が好きな友達2人と一緒に萩へ観光に行きました。そこで私たちは明治維新に貢献した侍や哲学者、
軍人など影響力のあった人の住居や私塾に訪れました。

In one of the dark, old houses, I swear I saw a figure standing inside before a flapping noren. When I looked again, the figure was gone, but the noren flapped as though someone had just left. I asked my friends if employees walk around in there, but they said they didn't think so and didn't see anybody.

ある古い一軒家の暗闇の中で、私はのれんの前に人影が立っているのを見ました（断言します！）。もう一度見ると人影は消えていましたが、
誰かが立ち去った時のようにのれんがパタパタと揺れていたのです。係の人がこの辺りを歩いていたかどうかを友達に尋ねましたが、
誰も見ていないと言いました。

One of them said it's because I said Takasugi Shinsaku wasn't handsome. So his spirit is mad 😱.

「高杉晋作はカッコよくないとカウラが言ったからじゃない？」と友達の一人が言ってました。高杉晋作の魂が怒ったのでしょうか・・・

Coming to Japan

Hello!　My name is Jacob, and I traveled to Japan for the first time with my girlfriend Monica just this past March.

こんにちは！SESに4月から加わりました、ジェイコブです。
今回は3月にガールフレンドのモニカと行った初めての日本旅行についてお話しします。

Though Monica and I knew that traveling to another country was going to be a daunting task, living out the experience was another matter entirely.  From Pittsburgh, we drove seven hours to get to New York City, beginning early enough in the day that we could arrive in time to receive our visas.  From that point, we stayed overnight in a friend’s apartment, then woke up around 4 am to prepare for our first flight on our trip to Japan.  That eleven-hour flight took us from JFK to Honolulu, where we had all of one night to enjoy the city and the (relatively) mild climate before waking up to catch our following ten-hour flight to Osaka.

他の国に旅行することは難しいことであると分かっていましたが、その国で生活するということは全くの別問題でした。まず、ビザを受け取るのにピッツバーグからニューヨークまで車で7時間運転をしました（早く出発したおかげで、ビザを受け取る時間に間に合いました。）そこから友人の
アパートに泊まり、日本に向かう準備をするため午前4時に起きました。JFK（ジョン・F・ケネディ）空港からホノルルまで
11時間の旅をしました。ホノルルでは都会の町と温暖な気候を一晩楽しんで、その後10時間かけて飛行機で大阪まで向かいました。

            When we finally arrived, we were exhausted – but without working phones, we couldn’t navigate or use our email, and so after a quick lunch, we managed to figure out how to acquire temporary SIM cards, then caught a taxi to our room for the night.

　　　　大阪に到着する頃にはヘトヘトになっていましたが、携帯電話が日本で作動しなかったので、ナビも使えなければメールも
使えませんでした。なので昼食後に携帯を作動させるSIMカードをどうやって手に入れるか調べて、ホテルへ向かうタクシーに乗りました。

           The next day brought with it the challenge of learning to navigate the Shinkansen system while barely being able to speak Japanese.  We arrived at the station several hours early, and found a small traditional Japanese restaurant to eat breakfast at before setting out to explore the area and make sure that we were prepared well ahead of our scheduled train. Eventually satisfied that we would be able to find the train and make it to Shunan in time to meet our appointed point of contact, Monica and I spent the rest of the morning catching up on much-needed rest before our train arrived.  We made it back to the station in time for a quick lunch, and recognizing the waitress who served us that morning, told her in broken Japanese that breakfast was delicious, and then tried to apologize for cluttering up the restaurant with our luggage.

　　　　翌日は日本語をほとんど話せない中で新幹線にどうやって乗るかということに挑戦しました。数時間前に駅に到着しましたが、
周辺を探検したり、乗る電車の確認をする前に日本料理屋で朝食をいただきました。結局は目的の電車を見つけて、周南での約束の時間に
間に合いそうだったので、よかったです。電車が到着するまでの朝の時間に、モニカと私は十分に休みました。昼食を食べに駅に戻ったのですが、ウエイトレスさんが私たちに朝食を運んでくれた人でした。なので私たちは彼女にぎこちない日本語で朝食がおいしかったですということと、
レストランを荷物で散らかしてしまったことを謝罪しました。

　　　　One two-hour ride through the Japanese countryside later, we arrived in Shunan, drove to Hofu, and situated ourselves in our designated hotel room where we would spend the next week waiting for our apartment to be cleared out and trying to acquaint ourselves with the area around YouMe town in Hofu.  There’s still so much that we have yet to see and experience here, but now that we’ve had time to relax and really settle in to this quiet little city, I think we’re both extremely grateful for the chance to have this experience.  Even though our Japanese is still very much a work in progress, people have been very patient and understanding with us, even though we can’t always communicate exactly what we want to. Everyone that we’ve met so far has been very helpful, and I’ve very much enjoyed getting to know the city as well as my students during my first two months in Japan.

　　　　1~2時間電車に乗った後、周南に到着して車で防府に行き、決められたホテルへ移動しました。翌週は次に住むアパートが綺麗になるまでそこで過ごし、ゆめタウン防府周辺について知りました。防府には私たちがまだ見たことも経験したこともないものがまだありますが、今ではこの静かな町で落ち着いた時間を過ごしています。日本語はまだまだ勉強中で、人々と自分たちがしたいコミュニケーションをとれないことも
ありますが、皆さん私たちのことを理解しようとしてくれています。私たちが出会った人々は皆、私たちのことを助けてくれます。
日本に来て２ヶ月が経ちますが、生徒の皆さんや防府市のことを知るのをとても楽しんでます。

Weekend Sightseeing!

Hello everyone! My name is Khaulah, and I'm a new teacher here at SES. It's very nice to meet you all!
皆さん、こんにちは！この度SESの講師となりました、カウラです。よろしくお願いします！

In the month and a half since arriving, my friends have taken me sightseeing around Yamaguchi. Because I am very new and have only just received my first salary, we only go to places that are free, and I haven't been able to buy much omiyage. I hope that my fellow teachers don't hate me! In the effort to get better at the Japanese culture of gift-giving, we went to an omiyage shop in Moji to buy fugu-related snacks. I was surprised to discover that Moji is also famous for...bananas! Japan is indeed a magical place. Here are a few pictures from Shimonoseki and Moji. 

日本に来てから1か月半、私の友達が山口観光に連れて行ってくれました。入ったばかりで最初の給料をもらったばかりだったので、タダで楽しめる場所に行きました。門司のお土産屋さんでは、フグのお菓子を買いに行きましたが、そんなに多く買えませんでした・・・

（他の先生たちが私のことを嫌いになりませんように・・・！）門司はバナナでも有名なんですね！日本は本当に不思議なところです。

Japanese history is very interesting to me, especially if it has to do with literature such as The Tale of Heike. Akama shrine is dedicated to the young Emperor Antoku, who was carried into the sea instead of being surrendered to the Minamoto clan. 

私にとって日本の歴史はとても興味深いものです。特に「平家物語」のような文学作品に興味があります。赤間神宮は源氏に囲まれた後、海の中に飛び込んで亡くなってしまった安徳天皇を祀っています。

MAKING CANELES IN JAPAN

Recently, I started to try to make caneles in my apartment. Do you know caneles? They are a French custard cake from the area of Bourdeax, also famous for wine making.

最近、「カヌレ」というお菓子を作り始めました。皆さんは「カヌレ」をご存知ですか？カヌレはワイン作りでも

有名なフランスのボルドー地方のカスタードケーキです。

Caneles are very delicious and when I researched their ingredients, they sounded easy to make. I bought a silicon mold, and began to try to make caneles.

カヌレはとても美味しくて、材料を調べた時に簡単に作れそうだと思いました。私はシリコン製の型を買って、

カヌレ作りに挑戦してみました。

You can see the first few times were very bad. The shape was wrong and the color was bad too. The taste was good. I was very sad and angry. 

見ての通りですが、最初の数回は上手にできませんでした。味は良かったのですが、形が変で色も良くありません。

During Golden Week, I tried many more times to make caneles, but every time I tried to make them, I failed. Badly.

ゴールデンウィークの間に、何度もカヌレ作りに挑戦してみたのですが、毎回失敗してしまいました。

At the end of Golden Week, I wrote an e-mail to a bakery shop in Paris, France. I asked to buy their caneles molds. They said yes and I bought eight of them! They were very expensive but worth the price. I also bought beeswax, which was difficult to find in Japan.

ゴールデンウィーク終盤、私はフランスのパリにあるパン屋さんにカヌレの型を買いたいというメールを書きました。良いという返事を頂き、

8つも購入しました！値段は高かったのですが、それだけの価値はありました。私は日本では入手困難なミツロウも購入しました。

I took a weekend and went to Fukuoka for caneles' research. I found caneles at three stores in the Tenjin neighborhood, Paul, DonQ, and Maison Kayser. They are located in the basements of large department stores. Each of them was good, but only Paul was the best. It had a good orange and rum flavor, the other did not.

週末にはカヌレのことについて、福岡まで調べに行きました。天神の近くにある「ポール」、「ドンク」、

「メゾンカイザー」の3店舗でカヌレを見つけました。この3つは大型デパートの地下にあります。

どれもおいしかったのですが、オレンジとラム酒の味がしたポールのカヌレが一番でした。

After a few times, I can make better canele than the professional shops! Amazing. The hardest part is cooking the caneles. You need high heat for a long time.

その後は専門店よりも美味しいカヌレを作ることができます！びっくりです。一番苦労したのは

カヌレを加熱するところでした。高温で長時間熱する必要があります。

 

 

I am happy now.

My trip to Suo Oshima

Hello, my name is Sofiya, and I work for SES in Hofu.

こんにちは！ＳＥＳ防府校で働いています、ソフィヤです。

One day, a while ago me and my fellow foreign teacher friends from Hofu organised ourselves to drive in two/three cars and go to Suo Oshima, where we could eat all the Mikan we wanted off from the trees, and bring back a full bag of Mikan each – free of charge.

先日、私と友達の先生と一緒に2，3台の車で周防大島に行ってきました。そこではミカン狩りをすることができて、袋いっぱいのみかんを無料で持って帰ることができました。

That was a great and such unique experience to me. Eating fruits from the branches is not foreign to me, as my grandparents used to have something like a private farm. However, the fruits I’ve seen growing on trees up until now have been – for example – pears, apples, cherries, plums, but never mikan, or clementines, or anything of the citrus family ever! We just don’t have that kind of climate suitable for them. So this was so exciting and fun! 

祖父母が農場でフルーツをもぎとって食べていたことがあったので、枝からフルーツをもぎ取って食べることは私にとってなじみのないことではありません。梨やリンゴ、サクランボ、プラムは今まで見たことがあったのですが、ミカンなどの柑橘類は初めてでした。私の地元では柑橘類が育つ気候ではないので、ミカン狩りはとても楽しかったです！

We collected all days, and afterward, we had a bento lunchbox organised for us by our hosts. It had loads of fish in there, and although not a big fish eater myself, I tried all the different things in that box. Also, there were plenty of alternative options in there. 

ミカン狩りの後は、お弁当を頂きました。中にはさまざまな種類の魚が入っていました。

This will also forever remain in my book the first day I ever drove for four hours in one day! I was absolutely exhausted by the end of that day, but it was good to have the company of my fellow passengers, who kept the conversation going.

１日に４時間も運転したことは忘れることはないでしょう。その日の夜は疲れましたが、同僚と話をし続けたことはいい思い出です。

What I found most fascinating, however, was when I came back and shared my adventure with one of my Japanese students. She explained to me how back around the 1950s, if I remember correctly, this specific island was going through a very difficult time, economically. Yamaguchi as a prefecture, apparently although struggling, still had some jobs to offer, whereas this island had nearly none. So a large group from this island specifically organised themselves and migrated to Hawaii, USA.

一番興味をそそられたことは、周防大島に行った話を私の担当生徒に話した時のことです。1950年ごろ（記憶が曖昧ですが）の周防大島は経済的に苦しかったみたいで、そのためアメリカのハワイに移住をした人もいたそうです。

As the years went on, some of them came back, whereas others remained there. And apparently there is a large group of people from Suo Oshima in Hawaii, living there to this day.

数年後に周防大島へ戻ってきた人もいればハワイに残った人もいたそうです。現在でもハワイには周防大島出身の人たちのグループが残っているとのことです。

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

It is said that "practice makes perfect". I think it is true. How about you? One of the most difficult things about learning a new language is finding ways to practice.

「習うより慣れよ」という言葉。本当にその通りだと思います。言語習得で一番難しいことは、練習方法を見つけることです。

In high school and junior high school, you could practice five days a week! How lucky you were! When I was in high school I used to practice speaking Spanish in class with a real Spanish teacher from Spain. 

中学・高校では週に5回は練習できたと思います。高校時代の私も、スペイン語の練習でネイティブのスペイン人の先生の授業を

受けていました。

So now that you are an adult, where and how do you find the time and place to practice your language? It is difficult, right?! In this post I will share my top 3 tips for practicing English every day. 

そして大人になった今、あなたはどこで、どのように言語習得をする時間と場所を見つけますか？難しいですよね？！今回は、毎日英語を練習するための3つの秘訣をお教えします。

Tip #1: Choose your style　（スタイルの選択）

You have to decide which type of practice you want to do. Maybe you want to practice listening. Maybe you want to practice speaking or writing or reading. The first thing you must do is decide which skill you want to increase.

どのタイプの練習をあなたがしたいのか決める必要があります。リスニングという方もいれば、スピーキング、ライティング、

リーディングという方もいるでしょう。最初にすべきはどのスキルを伸ばしたいか決めることです。

Tip #2: Understand your limits　（限界を知る）

The next tip is more difficult to understand because you have know what you can and cannot do. Maybe you are a busy office worker or maybe a struggling student. Maybe you have plenty of time on your hands. You have to evaluate your time and find places where you can practice and study. If it is important to you, you will find the time to do it.

2つめは理解するのがより難しいでしょう。なぜならあなたができること、できないことを知る必要があるからです。

忙しい会社員という方もいれば、苦労している学生だという方、時間をもてあましている方もいるでしょう。

自分の時間を評価し、勉強する場所を見つける必要があります。

Tip #3: Practice makes perfect（習うより慣れよ）

I will divide this part into two sections.

ここでは2つのパートに分けて話します。

Listening/Reading: （リスニングとリーディング）
These two areas are easier to do alone and can be done at home. I would strongly suggest listening to NHK radio's programs on English learning. They are free and give you a great opportunity to listen to Native and Japanese language speakers. Movies are another great way to get practice. Use English subtitles if you are very confident, or you can use listen to English and use Japanese subtitles. Either way you get to build your listening skills and vocabulary by reading the subtitles.

この2つは一人でも学習しやすく、家でもできます。ＮＨＫの英語学習ラジオ番組がオススメです。無料なうえに、
外国人と日本人の会話を聞く良い機会になります。
映画もオススメです。自信があれば英語の字幕で見てみたり、日本語の字幕で英語の音声を聞いたりしてみましょう。
どちらもリスニング力と語彙力の向上につながります。

Speaking/Writing: （スピーキングとライティング）
Continuing from watching movies, you should keep a notebook handy and write down any new words you hear. Also, writing short reviews of movies or concerts is a great way to practice writing. Write what things you liked and didn't like to get you started. For speaking practice, you should try listening to the NHK radio shows and repeating what they say. Listen for ten seconds and repeat. This is a little troublesome, but it is really good practice. Pronunciation is not a focus here. Only getting you to practice speaking. It will also boost your memory!

映画を見ながら、新しく聞こえた単語をノートに書き出していくのも良いです。また、映画やコンサートの感想を短く書くこともライティングの練習になります。好きだったところ、好きでなかったところを書いていきましょう。
スピーキングの練習では、ＮＨＫのラジオ番組を聴いて、出演者が言ったことをリピートしてみましょう。10秒間聞いてリピートです。ちょっと面倒ですが、本当に良い練習になります。発音はここでは重視していません。この練習であなたの記憶力も高まっていくことでしょう！

Those are my top 3 tips for practicing language outside of the classroom. You can always ask me in class for more advice if you want it. Be bold!
